Do you like to read?

Here's the thing; I gave up on this book. It has 1072 pages which doesn't intimidate me at all. I love long books but it was the weight. On the way to the library to return the book I stopped at the post office and weighed the tome on their digital scale. It weighed in at 3 lbs. 11.3 oz. Compared to a bag of sugar or flour at 5 lbs Under The Dome may seem light but for a book, that thing is heavy. I like to read in bed and holding it is awkward. Even sitting up it was a struggle to hold it. I hope King is successful with this endeavour but it's got a few strikes against it in my book. No pun intended :)

No Way
And a long time favorite, Emmit Smith. Not only good looking but a good person, uses his fame and fortune for good. Hmmm, must be I have a thing for cowboys in one form or another.
Who's on your list?

Not Everybody Likes It or Does It
There are people that dislike daylight savings time but I'm not one of them. They say it screws up their sleep schedule and moods but I honestly don't mind "fallling back" and have it get darker earlier for several reasons. I love to be in my jammies. Once in a while on a Sunday I'll stay in them all day. When it gets dark early I can get into them at 5:30 and not feel guilty since it's dark out. Of course the downside is that if you have to go out it seems very late even though it's early evening.

Weekend Update

This year in anticipation of said leaves being wet and heavy hubby recruited our youngest and three college friends to come rake and drag the leaves to the front for pick up by the town. The boys were lucky and they made short work of it. Here they are resting after their efforts.

A job well done and since they're still kids at heart they had to climb on the rocks along the back of the yard. Thanks guys! The yard is ready for winter.

Is it really him?
Being the dedicated blogger that I am I never leave home without my camera. Especially when I go to Walmart. Never know what I could contribute to this site. Anyway, we had just come out of a store when I saw this guy out front waiting for the Mrs....

Weekend Update

If you know me at all you'd know that I'm not a fan of fall, it's my least favorite season. I don't like how everything dies off, no more flowers or lush green trees. I hate naked trees, the only good thing about them is you can find some that are very uniquely shaped or have interesting bark.

Leaves, Leaves and More Leaves
Our Japanese maple has dropped most of its leaves, it was so beautiful and seemed to glow but now the branches are naked and I can see my neighbor's house again.

Flu

H1N1 has arrived with a vengeance. The school year started out slow with it but over the last week the virus had blossomed. We have a little over 500 students in my school and today 87 were out sick. Three that I know of have been hospitalized. The nurse's office was standing room only with sick kids waiting to be picked up. This flu hits hard, my niece had it for 9 days with pneumonia on top of it. My nephew has it now. I don't know one child or adult that has been able to get the vaccine. I'm worried for the children that have a chronic illness and the fear their parents are going through. I'm scared for my boys and they're healthy. If my college sophomore gets sick we have to go and get him, they don't want them in the dorms. My other son the nurse debated on whether to get the shot, decided to do so but now there aren't enough at the hospital for all the health care workers. I wonder what tomorrow will bring.

Heavy Sigh
I don't have many readers and just don't know how to get more. I've done what has been suggested and people find me but I guess they're not blog readers, just people searching different topics and I happen to have written about it. I'm not funny and don't write lyrical prose, just average.
*
I like to voice my thoughts and opinions, I love to hear the thoughts and opinions of others as well as the dialog that a blog can open but when that doesn't really happen it's disappointing. People don't take the time to comment. Maybe because I don't write about any drama in my life. I really don't have any now except the occasional flack with a sister. At one time I had lots of it but didn't have a blog and maybe wouldn't have shared it with the blog-o-sphere.
*
I read a decent amount of blogs and I try and leave comments but when there are already 50+ comments there and I agree with what many have said I just don't leave any. Sometimes I have a comment all typed and ready to post and I delete it. I don't know why. Maybe I should look for new blogs that aren't so big. It feels weird to me to read others, leave comments and it's like I don't exist to them. They don't bother to check me out. Maybe I'm being too sensitive. Maybe now isn't the time to ponder the future of this space.
*
For the most part I didn't used to care about all this. I wrote for myself and posted pictures I took and still do but has the fun gone out of it? Has it run it's course? I hope not because I truly did/do enjoy blogging.
*
As I said I do have a few loyal readers and thank you, you know who you are. I'm always grateful for your input.

Columbus Day

This gold and white cup is also from Mrs. R. (I never called her by her first name, 27 years ago she walked over to introduce herself as Mrs. Rowland so I always called her that or Mrs. R.) This cup and saucer belonged to her mother and has a sticker on the bottom that says 1899. The blue and gold cup came from Russia and is one of my favorites. Okay, back to work for me, lots more to dust...

Mother Nature
Part One
*
Mother Nature can be very beautiful but also very cruel. I feel bad for the people of the Philippines. The country received a month's worth of rain in 12 hours causing widespread flooding and destruction. Garbage has clogged the storm drains adding to it. At one time the capital, Manila was 80% underwater. While a few places are still underwater most are now covered in a thick sticky mud. People have been left homeless after their houses were swept away as well as members of their family. There are reports of looting and there's sewage in the streets which has fouled the fresh drinking water sources. People are searching for dry clothes, food and water and a place to stay. Electricity is out and the medical centers at one time (don't know about now) were shut down. The fear of disease is spreading. Unfortunately another storm is approaching.
*
Part Two
My oldest son is in a serious relationship with a Filipino woman. She was born in America but all of her extended family live in the Philippines. Her parents and two brothers live in NYC. We love her and think of her as the daughter we never had.
*
Part Three
For the last 6 months the two of them have been making arrangements for a once in a lifetime trip to the Philippines. After a 16 hour non stop flight from NYC to Hong Kong and another few hours to Manila, the plan is to spend 3 days in Manila, then travel to some outlaying areas to visit her family and introduce Kevin to them. They will end the trip with a week at a beach resort. They leave October 10. Right after this once in a lifetime storm has blown through. I've been on the fence about this trip from the beginning. The Philippines are not the safest of places for Americans and my son will stick out like a sore thumb, a tall, white, bald guy. I have their itenerary as well as the phone numbers of hotels and her family and was starting to feel comfortable but now this. I'm worried that they will be stranded without a hotel or running water or electricity. I'm worried that they've saved for this trip for so long and now they're going into an area that's been declared a "state of calamity". I've espressed my concerns to my son and I think he'd tolerating me. His girlfriend has emailed family and friends asking about conditions and we're waiting for some response.
*
It's not easy being a mother sometimes. No matter how old your child is you still worry; I want them to have a wonderful time but am concerned that the conditions are less than favorable.
*
Here's some of the places they're staying.
