Last year when my son was a junior in college he received the Rose and Earl Ingersoll Scholarship in English.
Saturday night we attended the Brockport Benefactors and Scholars Dinner where we got to meet Rose and Earl Ingersoll. I didn't get to speak with Mr. Ingersoll too much as he was seated across the table from me but I found out from Mrs. Ingersoll that she graduated from Brockport 50 years ago. When she attended the college it was rural farmland at the time, there were just a few buildings, most of her classes were held in Quonset huts and there were 900 students.
Mr. Ingersoll did tell us that since the economy has taken the downturn the endowment fund has taken a good hit. The scholarship was only one third of what it used to be. We told him that's okay, any help a college student can get is helpful and we appreciated their thoughtfulness and help.
My son has been very fortunate and has won 3 different college scholarships but will still graduate with student loans. He attends a SUNY school which is a NY state school. I don't know how people afford those highfalutin private schools. They must be the ones that are complaining that their college diploma isn't worth much.

Congratulations! With ours heading off to college in just 3 yrs, I hear you about the whole every bit counts. A neighbor's daughter is going to U of R to the tune of $53,000 per year for tuition, room & board. Her son is a high school senior this year so they're looking at a second tuition soon.
