That was an expensive phone call

Let me state up front, I don't really follow the NFL except for the Buffalo Bills. They're the only team I watch. I lived through the years of the four consecutive trips to the Super Bowl and four consecutive losses. I'm not going to say anything about this year's Bills, don't want to jinx them.
What I will say is that I don't always get the NFL.

As far as players in the league go I know just a few and they're what I would call marquee players, the popular, highly paid players that have endorsements.

Yes, I know who Troy Polamalu is and I like him. He seems like a humble, fun guy and a family man. I guess that's why I was so surprised to read that he was fined 10,000 for calling his wife from the sidelines. I had to read more, I was curious as to why he called her. Turns out he made a pretty hard tackle and left the field with a head injury. Polamalu is no stranger to brain trauma having at least five concussions since he was a freshman in high school. The more concussions a person has the less impact it takes to have another. After he was checked out by a doctor on the sidelines Polamalu asked to borrow his cell phone to call his wife to let her know he was okay. Apparently there is an NFL rule that states you cannot have a cell phone or use a cell phone 90 minutes before or during a game while anywhere on the field. Polamalu wasn't phoning for a pizza, checking the weather or getting inside intell on the game. He simply wanted to ease his wife's worried mind. This fine is ridiculous. I understand he broke the rule but in certain cases there should be exceptions. Have a phone locked in a box if they're so concerned about someone using it, to be used only in cases like this. Is that so hard? Maybe the NFL would rather their players loved ones be a nervous wreck wondering what the hell is going on.

To Polamalu the 10 grand is a drop in the bucket and worth every penny to get the message to his wife. It's absurd that this situation is subjected to a fine.

Another incident that occurred the same day was A J Hawk's half of a peace sign salute to the sidelines that the camera caught and went out over live TV.

I don't know this guy, I saw him in a game earlier this season and thought he looked like a greasy long haired stoner. Maybe he's a nice guy. I'm not naive enough to think that bad language doesn't happen in sports. I was a rink rat growing up, have attended hockey games (high school, college and pro) all my life; I've heard it all and I'm not some lily white genteel southern belle who's offended if I hear it. Although once my mother told some college kids at an RIT hockey game to clean up their language, her 3 year old grandson was right there.

Back to the NFL. The powers that be chose to fine Hawk 10,000 for flipping the bird. (get it, Hawk flipped the bird haha) the same amount they fined Polamalu for calling his wife after a possible injury. Hawk did this in celebration of sacking the Ram's quarterback. He states that it's an inside joke with some of his teammates. I'll buy that, guys are weird like that but it seems to me that one offense shouldn't have been fined and one wasn't fined enough since children and adults with delicate constitutions saw the obscene gesture. Maybe he should take a cue form Polamalu and use Head & Shoulders on the scraggly hair. I wonder why they don't put it in a pony tail or braid for games, it looks dumb flowing out from under their helmets. This coming from a woman who likes clean long flowing locks on a man.
Think Oded Fehr in The Mummy.
I thought he was the sexiest guy with those long wavy locks...

Then he cut all his sexy off and meh.

At least they didn't fine the two Jims, that's San Fran's coach Jim Harbaugh and the Lions coach Jim Schwarts for their little rumpus after SF snapped the Lions unbeaten streak. No punches were thrown and this stuff isn't all that unusual in sports.

See, doesn't it seem like I know a lot about football? Trust me I don't. I went to every home and away football game in my 4 years of high school and still don't know all the rules. I was too busy checking out the boys to pay much attention. I had to do a lot of research for this post.
